The project " Mozambique Smallholder Farmer Production and Productivity Project (MSF-PP Project)-GCP/MOZ/126/USA which’s major goal is to improve the productivity and production capacity of smallholder farmers through increased knowledge and skills due to better technical assistance and/or service delivery support by government extension and research in selected priority areas, is being implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADER) and technical assistance from Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and funded by USAID/US

Among the project components is the effective and sustainable management of Fall armyworm pest (FAW). The project has been conducting monitoring on FAW distribution, population changes and levels of infestation and damage through a FAW monitoring and early warning system (FAMEWS) throughout the country, since 2018 to 2023. FAOMZ would like to recruit a national specialist for FAW data processing and analysis, to assist in understanding the pest trends.

This vacancy announcement aims to recruit a national specialist for FAW data processing and analysis, for 15 working days, with a duration of two months (June to August 2023) to complete the assignment.

Reporting Lines

Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative of Mozambique, the National Data Analysis Expert will be home-based and will work closely with the Project Coordinator, reporting directly to project LTO and the Project Coordinator, under guidance of the Head of Programme.

Technical Focus

Data analysis: Data quality and cleaning, FAW monitoring and Management parameters, Agricultural Statistics, Socio-Economic survey Data and Analysis, data and/or results interpretation.

Tasks And Responsibilities

The specialist will be engaged in the implementation of the following activities, as described in the Terms of Reference:

  • Conduct, quantitative data cleaning of all field collected and existing national FAW monitoring data from 2019 to 2022 maize growing season;
  • Perform quantitative and qualitative data analysis using primary and secondary information according to recommended statistical packages and/or applicable software for the existing data;
  • Compose and/or compile tables according to the main variables contained on the FAMEWS data;
  • Support the national FAW team on the interpretation of the results from the data analysis;
  • Provide technical assistance to the national FAW team, to prepare and submit the final report based on the FAMEWS data at national level, which could be used as evidence for decision-making and planning for FAW management;
  • Based on the FAMEWS’s data results, prepare and submit recommendations for further strengthening of national capacity in FAW monitoring and management
  • Support the preparation of the final report;
  • Perform any other duty as required and/or on request.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

  • The candidate has a high degree and academic background in biostatistics, Agricultural Economics, Socio Economics and/or equivalent
  • Has, at least, 5 years’ experience on relevant experience in agriculture using statistical software packages, including experience on quantitative and qualitative socio-economic data analysis methodologies from surveys, monitoring and questionnaires;
  • At least 5 years’ experience in teaching data analysis and research;
  • Working knowledge of biostatistics, field surveys data collection, , interpretation and scientific report writing socioeconomics data analysis
  • National of Mozambique or a legal resident in the country.
  • Verbal fluency and proven experience in research and report writing in Portuguese and English.

  • Work experience in more than one location or area of work
  • Extent and relevance of experience in bio statistics and socioeconomic data analysis and related areas to this assignment
  • Experience on production system, food system, food security and nutrition
  • Experience in quantitative and qualitative statistical data analysis from socioeconomic surveys, questionnaires and researches
  • Ability to analyse complex information collected from different agricultural situations, reporting, visualization and presentation of results and recommendations from assessments, monitoring, and evaluations.
