The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is seeking a Project Manager, Food Quality and Safety to oversee and ensure effective delivery of Food Safety Quality workstream in Mozambique.  This role will be based in our GAIN Maputo office and is offered on a fixed-term basis of up to 24 months (subject to funding) based in Maputo.

About GAIN

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is a Swiss-based foundation launched at the UN in 2002 to tackle the human suffering caused by malnutrition. Working with both governments and businesses, we aim to transform food systems so that they deliver more nutritious food for all people. In particular, we aim to make healthier food choices more desirable, more available, and more affordable. GAIN’s mission is to advance nutrition outcomes by improving consumption of nutritious and safe food for all people, especially the most vulnerable to malnutrition.

About the role

GAIN has been in Mozambique since 2010, establishing a country office in 2013.  GAIN Mozambique has always focused on establishing public-private partnerships throughout its portfolio, focusing on large scale food fortification (LSFF), including universal salt iodisation.

As the country portfolios grow, the food safety and quality workstream is being restructured to amplify the range of services and technical expertise provided to government and private sector partners. In line with that need, GAIN is expanding its Food Safety Quality approach to cover other value chains not previously supported. Expecting to mobilise both internal and international expertise, GAIN aims to provide various technical support to improve the overall Mozambique food system (food safety and quality standards).

  • Oversees and ensures effective delivery of FSQ workstream in line with budgets;
  • Coordinate the FSQ projects’ financial execution and reporting with the Head of Programmes and the Finance Manager;
  • Manage and monitor expenditure against budgets for strategic and annual plans in adherence to financial guidelines while ensuring value for money;
  • Carry out regular budget monitoring and forecasting to ensure that the expenditures are within the agreed budget parameters;
  • Perform line-management function for relevant workstream team members;
  • Develop team members to maximise their contribution to the team and organisation.

  • To be considered for this position, candidates should have demonstrable experience in developing and managing projects, preferably in Food Safety and Quality or food fortification, or substantial international or national program management experience;
  • In addition to project management and strategic thinking abilities;
  • The postholder would need to have an analytical mind and commitment to quality, as well as a rigorous approach to all tasks with a high level of attention to detail;
  • Proven ability to work in an environment requiring collaboration with the private sector, Government, and national and international organisations.
